Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy looks to the future by laying the groundwork for students to reach their full potential and continue their education after high school. Teachers and staff use Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation research that recommends personalizing students' instruction in small classes where they work in an environment of interest and trust, using multiple assessments of work, following democratic and equitable policies and practices, and forming close relationships with the school's community.

The school is housed in the former Atkins Middle school building and allows students the opportunity to spend grades 6 through 12 in a small learning community.
