The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System offers magnet programs in biotechnology, computer technology, pre-engineering, leadership,visual and performing arts, and the International Baccalaureate curriculum. International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme

The teaching philosophy of the IB Primary Years Programme focuses on the total growth of maturing and developing children. The curriculum addresses students' educational, social, physical, emotional and cultural needs while integrating inquiry, internationalism and the experience of international schools with the N.C. Visual and Performing Arts School

At Diggs Elementary Magnet School, the arts are core parts of the basic curriculum and are thoughtfully integrated into daily classroom instruction to reach every child. This enriched environment is vigorous, challenging and demanding. Students are encouraged to connect, examine, imagine, idealize, test, tinker and adapt their thinking to achieve excellence in all areas. There are high expectations and standards for academic achievement. THE DOWNTOWN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

At the Downtown Elementary School, the school's location is central to its focus on teaching students about the world around them. Community resources are built into instruction to emphasize active, exploratory learning. The school is small, with about 330 students who are ages 3 through grade 5. Students at the Downtown Elementary School are assigned to classes of 15 students with one teacher for two years. Special options include extended day programs, half- or full-day preschool and kindergarten. Parents are required to spend one hour a week at the school.

MINERAL SPRINGS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Renzulli Academy of Arts and Technology

Joseph Renzulli, a child psychologist, suggested that a wider variety of talents should be identified and nurtured in children from all cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. His "Schoolwide Enrichment Model" is premised on developing children's full potential, instead of concentrating on preparing them for standardized testing. At Mineral Springs Elementary, teachers will use Renzulli's model with the state curriculum to spark students' curiosity and lead them in detailed investigations, often using the arts and technology as avenues. Students work in groups on projects to explore their interests.

MOORE MAGNET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Moore Magnet Elementary School provides students with life skills by using the theories of multiple intelligences and brain-based instructional practices to teach the state Standard Course of Study. Dr. Howard Gardner, a medical doctor and professor at Harvard University, theorized that there are many forms of intelligences, or "smarts," by which a person knows, understands and learns about the world. At Moore, Gardner's theories are put to use by giving students experience opportunities for learning through the eight "smarts." Students wear uniforms two days a week and their "eight-smarts" shirts on Fridays.

Project Lead the Way/Math, Science and Pre-Engineering

Hanes is the only middle school in Forsyth County offering Project Lead the Way, a pre-engineering program taught as an elective. Project Lead the Way is a national effort to make math and science relevant for students by applying the skills learned in the classroom to engineering projects.

The school's emphasis on gifted education allows every student to receive a rigorous education that addresses the ways they learn best. All students have opportunities to explore their interests, to expand their understanding of science, math and technology, and to excel as they develop new gifts and talents. Foreign languages offered include Latin, French and Spanish, and extracurriculars and clubs provide additional opportunities for students to explore their interests. Hill strives for academic excellence through a program enriched by experiences in technology and the visual and performing arts. Hill merges a variety of teaching strategies to present required course work within an arts-enriched curriculum that makes the most of students' talents and interests.

Students can participate in an accelerated program with an extended school year and specific academic interventions designed to accelerate student learning in reading and math. Magnet for Arts and Leadership

Mineral Springs Middle School's focus on the arts and leadership is designed to make the transition to middle school easier. The school's acclaimed arts programs help students bring out their individual talents while its emphasis on leadership will help students develop skills they'll need as adults.

Arts opportunities at the school include classes in drama, dance, visual arts, piano, stringed instruments, chorus, video production and gymnastics. Mandarin Chinese Language Immersion and Global Technology

Philo's magnet program offers instruction in Mandarin Chinese, International Business and World Culture, and Global Technology. These programs promote academic excellence, cultural awareness and provide the skills students will need for success in a global economy. All students are required to take a foreign language.

Students who enroll in the Partial Language Immersion Program are taught Mandarin Chinese through a Chinese language class, math and physical education. Students who choose International Business and World Cultures study all types of careers that are touched by foreign markets, including banking and trade. Global Technology students use computers, language labs and other technology to connect to a larger world.

WINSTON-SALEM PREPARATORY ACADEMY
Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy currently serves students in grades 6-11. Grade 12 will be added for the 2007-08 school year. The school is a joint effort between Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schols and Winston-Salem State University.

Housed in the former Atkins Middle School building, Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy looks to the future by laying the groundwork for students to reach their full potential and continue their education after high school. Teachers and staff use Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation research that recommends personalizing students' instruction, setting up small classrooms where students work in an atmosphere of interest and trust, using multiple assessments of students' work, following democratic and equitable policies and practices, and forming close partnerships with the school's community.

Schools of Biotechnology, School of Computer Technology and Pre-Engineering

Atkins is like no other school in Forsyth County. Much like a college or university, it offers three schools on one campus. The Schools of Biotechnology, Computer Technology and Pre-Engineering provide rigorous high-level classes that prepare students for courses in those subjects at four- or two-year colleges, or to enter the workforce. Students must choose a school within Atkins and will use technology and equipment that rivals what is found at college labs or in the workplace.

Parkland is an authorized IB World School offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. From the IB aims and objectives, Parkland created its magnet school theme of Rigor, Relevance, Relationships Internationalism and the Arts. All Parkland students are exposed to the rigorous standards of this internationally recognized program through Grade Level Projects and the Freshman Humanities Wheel.

The IB Diploma Programme is a rigorous course of study for juniors and seniors that provides a liberal arts curriculum from a global perspective. Since 1923, the arts have been an important part of Reynolds academic offerings and a source of pride for students, parents and alumni. As a magnet school, Reynolds will integrate the arts in all core academic areas to provide students with increased opportunities for creativity, originality and critical thinking – all essential skills in the 21st-Century workplace. An exciting array of new arts courses also will expand opportunities for excellence. In addition to their core academic courses, students will have the opportunity to choose from three distinctive arts strands: Arts Infused, Arts Aware and Arts Intensive.

Students will experience a culture of the arts through campus wide, arts-related events and two professional performances each year. A "lunchtime" venue will be used to stage student performances, and upgraded projectors and sound systems will allow performances to be broadcast to classrooms and common spaces.
