Paisley Announces New Programs |
| 9-10-2002 |
Foreign Language: International Baccalaureate curriculum requires all students to learn a second language. Three languages are available: French, German and Spanish.
Approaches to Learning: is central to the IB program, as it is concerned with developing each student's intellectual discipline, attitudes, strategies and skills which will result in critical, coherent and independent thought. Thus, providing the student the capability to solve problems and make decisions. Emphasis: True learning is more than acquisition of knowledge.
Community and Service: starts in the classroom and extends beyond it, requiring students to participate in the communities in which they live. Emphasis: Developing community awareness and concern, increasing sense of responsibility, and acquiring skills needed to make an effective contribution to society.
Socratic Seminar: provides opportunity for students to share their reflections on issues from a personal point of view, taking into account the experience they have gained through related researches and class activities. Emphasis: The inter-relatedness of subjects and issues.
Interdisciplinary Units: Investigative study which integrates elements of several course disciplines across subject groups (English, Math, Music, Health, World Issues, etc.).
Integrated Visual Art: Art Instruction will be delivered by certified Art Teacher in Team-Teaching setting with English, Math, Science and Social Studies teachers. Artistic focus will be interwoven into academic core classes.
Summer Packet: Schoolwide Interdisciplinary Unit/A SINGLE SHARD - Every student picked up their packet in May and June to work on over the summer. Designed to provide students with a first introduction to curriculum aspects of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. All instructional activities the first two weeks of the 2002-2003 school year will center on the novel "A Single Shard."
Partnership with Wake Forest Foreign Language Department: Students from Wake Forest will work with students and classes at Paisley. Wake students will share their summer or semester experiences abroad. Paisley students will compare their research of specific countries and cultures with students who have lived in the countries selected.
