All students at Hanes have opportunities to explore their interests, to expand their understanding of science, math and technology, and to excel as they develop new gifts and talents. Project Lead the Way, a national pre-engineering program, is an elective that is taught at Hanes only.

As a magnet school, Hanes is open to middle school students from throughout Forsyth County. Transportation is provided through Magnet Express Bus runs.

Hanes has a standard mode of dress so that students remain focused on academics. The school's dress policy includes black, yellow, white or purple shirts and khaki or black pants or skirts or shorts to the knee.

About Project Lead the Way

Project Lead the Way will be offered as an elective each year. It covers:

  • Automation and Robotics
  • The Magic of Electrons
  • The Science of Technology
  • Design and Modeling; and
  • Flight and Space

An Emphasis on Gifted Education

Faculty and staff at Hanes recognize that every student is gifted. Teachers of core subjects are encouraged to pursue licensure in gifted education. In addition, all Hanes teachers receive training on Joseph Renzulli's Schoolwide Enrichment Model, which suggests that intelligence tests are just one way to identify giftedness.

Foreign Language Instruction

Students take foreign language classes each year and may choose from French, Latin or Spanish.

Technology throughout the School

Federal Magnet Schools Assistance Grant money will greatly expand students' access to technology, including laptop and classroom computers, flat screen monitors, digital video cameras and equipment, and TI-NavigatorTM  and mimio systems.

The magnet program is open to students from throughout Forsyth County. Transportation is provided by Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools to any student who fills out a Magnet School Application.
