At the Downtown School, its location is central to the school's focus on teaching students about the world around them. Community resources are built into instruction to emphasize active, exploratory learning.

The Downtown School offers programs for students ages 3 through grade 5. The 2010-11 school year will be the first year sixth grade will be offered, and seventh grades and eighth grades will be phased in consecutively. The school requires parents to volunteer an hour per week per child.

Up to one-third are children of employees of the school's primary business partner, Reynolds American Inc. The rest of the school's students come from families who live or work in the central urban area of Winston-Salem.

There are about 330 students in the elementary program. They are assigned to classes of 15 students with one teacher for two years. Special options include extended day programs, half-day or full-day preschool and kindergarten.

The middle school program will be small, with about 135 students in grades 6 through 8. Students who are in the elementary program have the option of remaining for grades 6 through 8. There will be three classes of sixth graders with 15 in each class. The application process for students not currently in the school will be lottery based.

Students are selected for the Downtown School by random drawing. No transportation is provided.
