J.D. Diggs Elementary School offers a course of study designed to engage students through direct instruction in visual arts, theater, choral music, dance, Suzuki strings, band, piano and music composition. Students develop their natural creativity and expression as they write and compose original works, and they learn to exercise newfound skills in audio production and technology as they share these works with a variety of audiences.
Reading, writing, and math come alive as arts experiences are integrated into the traditional academic curriculum. The arts-based focus at Diggs enables students to actively practice and perform these concepts and skills within the framework of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
Diggs is located in an historic Winston-Salem neighborhood shared by the North Carolina School of the Arts, Salem Academy and College, and Winston-Salem State University, schools well-known for their outstanding arts and applied technology programs. Diggs combines the collaborative efforts of community partnerships, artists-in-residence, and a strong arts-based curriculum to provide a program that serves as a teaching and learning institution for both students and faculty.
