Atkins Academic and Technology Complex has three schools: a biotechnology school , a computer technology school and pre-engineering school that each represent the economic direction of our community. These schools provides a college-preparatory curriculum with a career-related theme. These schools share basic features:
- Small learning communities of students who have some of the same teachers for at least two years, and who share several classes each year.
- Teachers working in teams to deliver instruction and to support students.
- A college-preparatory curriculum with career themes.
- Advisory committee with representatives from local businesses, industries and colleges and community colleges.
- Support from businesses, industries and community organizations in providing internships, mentors, field trips, job-shadowing and community-service opportunities.
Within each school, there are two stands of curriculum that were requested by business, industry and community leaders who recognize the technological expertise required to qualify for many jobs.
The Biotechnology School includes strands in:
- biomedical skills
- biotechnology strand
The Computer Technology School includes strands in:
- scientific visualization
- computer engineering strands
The Pre-engineering School includes strands in:
- advanced manufacturing
- pre-engineering
Course work and studies will be designed to encourage student interest in the three career areas and to encouage them to continue their studies at a four-year university or college, community college or technical school.
To prepare for careers and college-level expectations, Atkins' students will participate in mentoring, job shadowing and internship programs and will benefit from a head start in preparing to continue their education after high school. Advisory committees made up of leaders in related businesses and industries will work with each school to make sure that the curriculum remains relevant and up to date.
