The mission of Ashley Elementary School is to educate and nurture all students in every facet of their elementary experience. The clean, safe, diverse, child-centered environment invites students to learn and motivates them to inquire and discover. The faculty, staff, and administration learned in February 2006 that the school had been officially authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IB-PYP).
The IB-PYP teaching philosophy focuses on the total growth of maturing and developing children. The curriculum addresses students' educational, social, physical, emotional, and cultural needs and integrates the educational research, practice, knowledge, and experience of international schools with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCS). The result is a relevant, engaging, accelerated, and creative educational program. Specific questions, designed for exploration, inquiry, and study, guide Ashley's teachers and students as they work in the IB-PYP curriculum:
- Who are we?
- Where are we in place and time?
- How do we express ourselves?
- How does the world work?
- How do we organize ourselves?
- How should we share our planet?
The goal of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme is to develop students' abilities to ask questions and to become involved in the concerns of the global community.
The IB Primary Years Programme fosters students who are:
Inquirers
Thinkers
Communicators
Risk-Takers
Knowledgeable
Principled
Caring
Open-minded
Well-balanced
Reflective
